We asked Pat to let us know what a typical day is like for him and his father on their farm in spring. Farming is a 24 hour job at this time of year – spring is calving season, which is by far the most hectic time of the year for our farmers. As the cows could be giving birth at any time, Pat even has a CCTV camera installed on the cows, which he keeps an eye on from his bedroom! Below is Pat’s description of a typical day in spring:
Mornings:
“We get up at 7:30, and our first job is to make sure the cows are all OK, as many of them are calving at the moment. Then we take the cows to be milked, which usually takes about an hour. After that, the cows stay out on the grass to graze, and we feed the calves. We then usually go for breakfast at about 9:30.

During the day:
Our days are spent carrying out general jobs that need to be done on the farm – this might include maintenance, cleaning and repair work.
Evenings:
The cows are milked again, and we feed the calves again. Once everything’s done, we relax by watching a bit of television, or we might pop down to the bar for a chat with the locals. There’s always a friendly face down there!”
