Spring was the busiest and most hectic time of year on the farm, as it was calving time. This season comes to an end in early June, which gives our farmers a chance to relax a little!

Summer is the time of year to ensure that grass quality is kept high, and the cows are rotated around the fields to ensure they are always grazing on lush grass. From early August, the farmers start letting the grass grow longer in the paddocks. This is because it is just after calving season, so there are more animals on the farm to eat the grass, and some of this grass is made into silage, ready for the cows to eat in winter. One of our farmers, Andrew Gow, walks his farm every week to carry out a grass budget. Just like a financial budget, Andrew carefully calculates his grass growth to ensure his cows have plenty of grass. This summer, Andrew is also working hard to install a new pipeline on his farm to allow his cows to easily drink water when they want it. This is important, as in the summer months cows can get through a lot of water! Once all the cows are grazing, work around the farmyard is not so pressing, so this means housing maintenance and cleaning can be done for the coming winter. Like everyone else, our farmers like a holiday, and as the workload is often lower at this time of year, now is the time to take one! |
