Pats Typical Day
Pats Typical Day

We asked Pat to tell us what a typical day entails for him at winter...

"I usually get up at around 6:30, and my first job is to bring in the cows for milking, which usually takes until around 8 o’clock. Once they’ve been milked, I take the cows back outside. At the moment we are in the process of building a new milking parlour, so this is taking up a lot of my time.

Winter is one of the quietest seasons on the farm - my main focus is on general maintenance around the farm, so in the afternoon I carry out any work that needs to be done, such as mending fences around the farm and looking after my machinery. We also make sure the cows’ houses are ready for when it’s too cold and wet for them to be outside. Towards the end of winter we start preparing ourselves and the farm for spring, which is calving season.

In the evenings, we all like to chill out, and maybe watch some television. Recently a lot of my spare time has been taken up with wedding plans, but I don’t mind that! At weekends, I carry out my usual work on the farm, but if I have any spare time I’ll go and watch my old team mates playing rugby, and socialise with them after the game.”
